HWT ballot and SCT Quarterfinals Predictions

Here is my ballot for the Hunterdon/Warren Tournament, which gets seeded Sunday. If you want analysis on why I placed teams where, you will have to read the girls basketball notebook in Saturday's paper. It is addressed.

1. Hunterdon Central; 2. North Hunterdon; 3. Voorhees; 4. Belvidere; 5. Phillipsburg; 6. Warren Hills; 7. Delaware Valley; 8. South Hunterdon; 9. North Warren; 10. Hackettstown.

SOMERSET COUNTY TOURNAMENT QUARTERFINALS:

I'll give you a score and one or sentences on each game, but, again, for more in-depth analysis...wait for it...wait for it...READ THE NOTEBOOK. I can't give everything away without getting the company 50 cents in return.

Rutgers Prep 56, North Plainfield 42: A close game initially, Rutgers Prep eventually wears down North Plainfield.

Watchung Hills 50, Immaculata 47: Be careful picking a blowout here. Immaculata plays its best basketball at this time of year on Saturdays and will be hungry to make up for Thursday night's 12-point output.

Montgomery 46, Bridgewater-Raritan 39: This is one of those "How difficult is it to beat a team three times in the same season?" kind of games. I say difficult. But not difficult enough for an upset.

Gill St. Bernard's 64, Franklin 62: To be honest, I don't have any inkling who is going to win this game, and that is why I am picking it close. Franklin can run with Gill St. Bernard's in a way not many teams can, so how will the Knights react to that?

I don't see Gill beating Franklin very easily. While they are both teams that like to up-tempo the game, Gill is way more out of control. If Franklin is able to settle things down a bit, and if Scott does a good job handling the ball and if they take advantage of Beverly's size, Franklin should win this one no problem.

A 3-point game between WH and Lata after that game with No. Hunterdon, I don't know about that one. Was anyone at that game that can comment about what happened? According to posts in other forums Lata had a difficult time with defensive pressure which I would expect from WH today.

Bridgewater just beat Montgomery 62- 44. Great game by Sbrilli and Helmstetter!

BR over Monty!

Not surprised, Montgomery is too reliant on two players and BR has come so far this year. Congrats to the Panthers.

Congrats to Bridgewater! Anyone know what happened to Monty? Last time these teams met, Monty won fairly easily.

Ryan you got 2 out of 4, not bad. You had Rutgers Prep, the score not as close as you predicted but it looks like the flow of the game was as you predicted when I looked at the box score, it looks like Prep had about a 6 to 9 point or so lead after the half and 3rd qtr then Prep took control in the fourth qtr. The WH Lata game was close also until the fourth, Lata came to play and played tough after that really bad loss to North. Gill Franklin game was high scoring as you indicated but Fanklin won instead of Gill. Also as you noted BR proved that it's tough to beat a team three times, they smoked Monty by 18, now that was a shocker, I thought BR could win but by a couple of baskets.

Wow - actual Hunterdon/Warren coverage! I can't believe it. Even though circulation reaches me way out here in Hunterdon County, I thought you only covered Bridgewater, Somerville and Immaculata. How EXCITING!

Wow - you certainly aren't a happy Hunterdon fan. I have to defend Ryan here - the H/W tournament hasn't even started yet, hence why the SCT is getting all the coverage. Before the Somerset tournament started, Ryan covered Hunterdon pretty extensively, especially HC, NH, and Voorhees. It's just been "the talk" lately after the second Ville/Lata game and the debate over coaching. Chill out.

We are all hoping that Ryan posts the H/WT seeds tonight right after the seed meeting. Hoping that he has at least one H/WT coach who will call him with the seedings. The reason we are so interested is that the top three seeds in the H/WT would easily be the top three seeds in the SCT or at least 3 of the first 4 would be Hunterdon County teams. The big 3 from H/W are something like 11-3 vs. SCT teams. Watchung Hills was the only SCT to beat Central and Rutgers Prep and Montgomery were the only SCT to beat Voorhees, and nobody in Somerset County has beaten North Hunterdon. Ask the 'Latta girls how good North Hunterdon is? Warren County will be represented by Belvidere, who is undefeated and has beaten all of the Group one's and two's in the Skylands, including all the 'small' schools in SCT. Having said that, . . . Belvidere is going to get knocked out of the H/WT early. One and done I'm afraid.

I think you underestimate some of the Somerset schools (or more likely, overrate the 'big 3' from Hunterdon). It is my opinion North Hunterdon is the best team in the area this year, but HC and Voorhees are not as superior. HC struggled last night with Del Val and a few weeks back Somerville (you know, that small Group II school from Somerset county) almost took down Voorhees in a game they dominated until the fourth quarter and should have won. I'd agree that North seems like the class of the Skyland this year, but the other two are very much on par (if not below par) with many schools from Somerset county.

I believe Montgomery beat North in their x-mas tourney also Hun who blew out HC by like 30 lost to Rutgers Prep by double digit so I am not convinced by H/W superiority arguement.

Stand corrected with the Monty vs. North Hunterdon results over the Christmas Holiday, my bad. So,...ok 11-4. As far as Central goes they had a real bad 5 or 7 days lost 3 or 4 out of 5. Guess they had some problems then, that are now over and done with. They should walk away with the H/WT title along with the Delaware West title. Don't think they are gonna lose again till they get deep into the state tourney.

Now that the seeds are out, WOW! did Voorhees and Pburg ever get screw'd, by having to play each other in the first round. No way Belvidere deserves a 3 seed, at best a 4 and in all fairness a good agrument could be made for a 5. Because of this seeding fiasco Central the 2 seed, literly gets to walk into the finals. No way they lose to a play-in team or a small school, the Bells - Del Val winner. While North Hunterdon the 1 seed in all likelyhood is gonna get Voorhees, guess thats the price the seeding folks thought North should pay for hosting the finals.

Just cannot believe that Monty lost to Bwater, . . . huge upset. Also cannot believe that 'Latta was ever in the game with Watchung Hills.

I live in Hunterdon County and happen to love the coverage Ryan does of girls basketball. I'm looking forward to your Hunterdon/Warren tournament coverage. Keep up the good work Ryan!
